Ocala Marathon 2012

Ocala Marathon 2012

26.2. In my home town? YES PLEASE! After coming off from my first Marathon at Disney, my original plan was to volunteer for the Ocala Marathon. I said I was going to run one and be done. Well let’s just say I got the running bug! 14 days after completing my first MARATHON, I ran and completed my 2nd MARATHON!  I still can’t believe I, Erika Joy Robertson, am a MARATHONER!

If you haven’t run a race in your home town, I highly recommend it. Seriously. Go find one and register for it. Now. There is no packing (hallelujah) for those who travel with a 2 year old you will sing Glory in the Highest! Second, you get to eat your own food. Third, and my most important you get to SLEEP IN YOUR OWN BED! Can I get an AMEN! Yes, thank you!

I must admit it didn’t feel real as me and the boys were walking into the Paddock Mall to go to the expo, but once inside and you see fellow runners wearing their running shirts, and you see all the apparel for sale (of course at a ‘runners discount’ ) which means not much at all,  picked up my race packet, checked out the vendors then headed for home for our pre marathon nap aka our normal Saturday afternoon siesta! And yes on weekends, when Nolan takes his afternoon nap, so does Mommy and Daddy! Did I mention how taking a nap before a race in your own bed is amazing….well let me say it again. It was amazing!

That night, I ate my usual pre long run meal. My homemade Turkey Feta Meatballs from the awesome Runner’s World Mag, got Nolan ready for bed,got my running ensemble together, then we weren’t too far behind him. I only woke up twice, nervous pee I guess haha! Then up at 5am, ate my breakfast, drank my coffee then off we went!

We arrived at the mall at 6:15am. Nolan has become quite the early bird when it comes to race mornings! He had his blanket and we rolled the window down and he was telling “Go runners” as people walked by the car. Since this was a small race, I just hung out in the car. Kept the heated seats on while finishing up my coffee

Finally it was time to get my game face on. I headed to the starting line, did a double check of my gear, and said a prayer. I knew the course was going to be alittle more difficult than Disney.

The first 18 miles were going great.

Kept a little more than 10 minute pace. Met up with some friends, and met some new ones! That is one of the great things about running! Then the sun came out, and it heated up quick. Than the mental part of running started settling in. I knew what has ahead of me aka 42nd street hill and I started praying. And worshiping. Just as I was starting to get tired, over my headphones came the sweet voice of Kari Jobe’s song “You are Good’ In that very moment, the focus switched from me to Him. I was running a marathon and was able to worship the one who was giving me the strength to put one foot in front of the other! How awesome is that! After that song came on, Oh Happy Day came on and I arrived at the next water/food stop. There was my sweet boys cheering Mommy on!

Then the heat hit me and I could barely get my legs going again.

Time to get in the zone. So I  cranked up some Skillet and tackled that hill.

Once I got up that hill I was almost to mile 25 and I had nothing left. I kept going between power walking and running. I made the last turn to mile 26 and could hear the cheering. I saw Nolan and Jeremy and willed my body to finish strong. Nolan came running to me yelling “Go Mommy”. I scooped him up in my arms and crossed the finish line holding my little man! I crossed the finish line at 5:2:58. Only a minute slower than Disney and on a Boston Qualifier Course, I will say well done!

And with that picture I close this post. I ran 26.2 miles then 14 days later I did it again. I think my marathon days are over for awhile. Jeremy and I have a half marathon we’re looking at in a few months, but as far as 26.2, I have came and conquered you twice. Thank you for the memories!

Cooking

Cooking

Its no surprise that I love to cook. If you follow me on Facebook you have seen my very low quality pictures of some pretty awesome dishes that I have made!

I definitely get my love of cooking from my Mom. I wish I was as natural as a cook as she is. I am bound by a recipe. I need exact measurement. I need a guide. Sorta like how we as Christ followers need the Bible. It tells us exactly how much, how little, how to make an outstanding life and how to ruin it. Being able to cook for my boys, family and friends is one of the ways I express my love for them. There is nothing more rewarding than being able to satisfy the hunger of a little boy’s belly or  make something for Jeremy that he loves.

I will try and post the recipes and pictures of the things I make on here so I don’t clutter up my Facebook wall;) I wish I had a decent camera, or a camera at all at this point to take pictures.  Right before Christmas, Nolan thought the camera would be a good substitue for a football and yes, he spiked it. And with hands raised in the air, yelled “TOUCHDOWN” (((sigh)))As I write this a pin from Pinterest comes to mind. So bear with me as I am still learning the ropes:) Well both boys are down for their afternoon naps, time to pull out something for dinner! I’ll let you know what’s on tap!

What is a Fragrant Runner?

What is a Fragrant Runner?

So I think every blog name needs to be explained. Each blogger wants their blog to stand out, be set apart from all the others. Well I am the same way. When the name came to me when I had come back from a run one afternoon and I smelled to high heaven (yes I am not afraid to admit that!). Our pastor had been talking one Sunday about how our lives need to smell of the fragrance of God and what He has done.

It clicked.

I knew that putting the two words together is as opposite as oil and water. But I have found that running has allowed me to have time with God that I don’t get at home. With every breath, every step, every mile that I run, I want my life and everything I do to point back to God. I don’t always succeed but I serve a God of second chances and know that I can start over and fresh.

The reason for the blog is I have had several people ask me to write about my experiences with running. How did I get started? How in the world does one run 13.1 miles and now 26.2 miles…..at one time?! Well one foot at a time! Haha! My favorite quote for running is one by Confucius….”A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” and my favorite verse is Hebrews 12:1 ” Run with patient endurance the race set before you”

Now onto the getting started part. My running journey began back in October of 2010. I had put on 50lbs with Nolan and had not lost much weight since Nolan came home. I had about 20lbs to lose to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight and was on Facebook one night and saw a Couch to Marathon program that was starting the next weekend at a local church. I knew that I needed to sign up. So that next morning , off Nolan and I went to get started. We got home and I decided I was going to go for a starter run of 3 miles. Hey, I was a runner before so how hard could it possibly be? Right? Well I barely made it A SINGLE MILE! I was defeated before I had even started. I thought I can’t even run 1 mile. how in the world am I going to run a half marathon!?

That next day, I went out again. And the day after that and so on. I quickly found my groove and by the first weekend in December I was going to be heading out for my longest run to date. 10 MILES! Well I finished my 10 miles in 1hr 50 minutes which was awesome….the not so awesome part was I ended up doing too much too soon and came down with bad shin splints. Defeated. Again. Come on Lord I thought, I know this is what I am supposed to be doing, why am I hurting like this? And in His soft voice He said to me, ‘Slow down. Use every minute you are out there for my glory.’ Well I slowed down. Alot. A whole 2 minutes to be exact. And what do you know….they shin splints went away and by slowing down I gained 2 amazing running partners and together we trained.

We met every Saturday morning to run. We shared our ups and downs. Our frustrations, our accomplishments and our stories. I got to know 2 amazing women by just slowing down. How many opptunities are we missing that the Lord has for us because we just won’t slow down.

Oh and yeah, I ran my half marathon. Then I ran another, and another and many more after that:)

Are you allowing your life to be a fragrant offering to Him?

Day 1 of this Journey

Day 1 of this Journey

Well here goes nothing. Welcome to my blog!!!! I can’t believe I am writing this!

God has been working in my life in so many ways and I am hoping that by sharing my thoughts with you, it will not only be a way for me to remember the journey, but that you will be encouraged and know that God is good and He can be trusted! One of my favorite verses has become 1Thessalonians 5:24  the Message ” The One who called you is completely dependable. If he said it, he’ll do it!” and it makes me think of my girl Mandisa and her amazing song “Stronger“. These lyrics can bring me right up and out of any funk I am in and I want to share them with you~

“Try and do the best you can
Hold on and let Him hold your hand
And go on and fall into the arms of Jesus
Oh, lift your head it’s gonna end
God’s right there
Even when you just can’t feel Him
I promise you that He still cares

‘Cause if He started this work in your life
He will be faithful to complete it
If only you believe it
He knows how much it hurts
And I’m sure that He’s gonna help you get through this”

So with those words I close this first post. Remember He who called you to follow Him will be faithful to you!

Blessings~
